Inner Circle - June 2013

Make This the Year of Yes

As the school year winds to a close and another cohort of exceptional graduates from the Lundquist College of Business enters the workforce, I wanted to share a simple concept we often don't give its due: Always be open to saying yes.

If asked to collaborate on a project, say yes. If asked if you are open to travel, say yes. Additional training on a program or concept? Yes. Mentorship opportunity? Yes. Curry from the new food cart down the road? Yes, why not?

Saying yes has power. It sets you up to be the person people go to when they need something done not just right, but with creativity and aplomb. Be that person.

If you don't know something, learn it. Perhaps easier said than done, but impossible if one is not open to additional learning in the first place.

No closes people off. Yes opens doors, windows, minds, and hearts.

Of course, saying yes is hardly a revolutionary concept. But like drinking water, exercising, and getting enough sleep, it is an easy suggestion to cast aside in favor of more seemingly pressing matters.

A simple yes can change your life--and someone else's.

John Lennon once told an interviewer it was Yoko Ono's positivity that drew him to her. Ono had created an art installation where one climbed to the top of a ladder and peered through a magnifying glass at a tiny message. It said simply, "YES."

Lennon is quoted as saying. "And just that 'YES' made me stay in a gallery full of apples and nails, instead of just walking out."

Say yes. See what happens.

I hope this message of enthusiasm and openness has made an impression. Many themes touched on this academic year within Inner Circle have resonated with readers. Thank you sincerely for the feedback. It is welcome and appreciated.

Inner Circle will be taking a hiatus July and August. We look forward to reconnecting with you in September.

Thank you, alumni, donors, and friends, for your continuing support. Our fine college has been in operation since 1884 and our groundbreaking Lillis Business Complex will celebrate ten years of innovation in October. All because some brave folks said yes.

Congratulations to the class of 2013, and GO DUCKS!

Cordially,
